There is an epidemic of mental illness and our institutions are failing to heal people. Disorders are treated with medications which cause harmful physical and mental side effects such as potential for homicide. Adam Lanza was on psychiatric medications. Drugs mask the symptoms - we need community support for healing. In Western Lapland, with little medication, they build outpatient programs that help people recover and function in society. Currently, our system turns mental problems into chronic illness - very costly to society. Nonviolent Communication is a tool that can be used to teach people skills for a fulfilling life. Outreach programs and healing centers can be created to encourage dialogue and healing. Toxic drugs are not the answer. They ruin lives and bankrupt the country.
